Journey to Adulthood Pilgrimage to Costa Rica
As people of faith, we seek to touch those places where others have sought and found the Christ. By leaving our homes and families, and all the comforts and familiarities which they offer to us, we cast aside the day_to_day crutches and comforts of our lives. On pilgrimage we experience not only the other lands, people, and sights which we long to see, but a part of ourselves which is essential and unique.
Engaging in a true adventure involving body, mind, and spirit is a central "rite of passage" to adulthood. The experience of travel, of unfamiliar territory and cultures, and uncharted feelings and experiences, helps us to define our true selves. St. Gregory the Great’s high school youth group was able to experience this when we took our pilgrimage to Costa Rica this summer.
_ George Drewry, chaperone and trip organizer
On May 25th, we embarked on our Pilgrimage Trip with the Youth Group of St. Gregory Church. What an incredible adventure awaited us! We even experienced an earthquake! We were 9 teenagers and 3 adults and one young adult. We were hosted by Tomas Dozier in his home school project located in San Rafael de Vara Blanca, right in the middle of the tropical forest. He has created a valuable program _ ADE, Association for the Development through Education, and he is promoting high school education to the native kids so they can be employed by the touristic industry of the region. We lived with the ADE students for ten days. This region is unbelievably beautiful, and every corner is like a movie set. But what impressed me more than the lush landscape was the "human" landscape. We worked, we played, prayed and ate together. The experience and the relationships we developed with the kids and the teachers of ADE was something I will never forget. When we travel we can visit the wonders of the world, but what stays permanently in our memories are the friends we make. No wealth, no riches of the world compare to the riches of the human heart. _Viviane Van Giesen, chaperone
As I reflect on our pilgrimage to Costa Rica I'm left with so many good memories. What a blessing it was to watch our youth enthusiastically embrace each moment! They woke up early each morning not knowing what the day held for them. They were unfamiliar with the language and culture, yet they found ways to communicate with the Costa Rican youth through laughter, music, and games. Relationships were built through collaboration in both work, learning, and play. They were collaboratively working together at the small elementary school in Manzanilla, sharing daily kitchen responsibilities, and openly sharing their beliefs and feelings on a variety of topics! I was so proud of them. I'm certain that their experiences in Costa Rica will leave lasting impressions on their lives! _Diane Drewry, chaperone
All of us extend our heartfelt thanks to you, our home parish, for your wonderful support of this trip, and us in our continuing Journey to Adulthood. Pilgrimage participants were Jerrin Jose, Rae Kretzer, Johnny Wheeler, Zach Hamlin, Zoe Corn, McGowan Drewry, Trey Morris, Clare Severens, and Cedric Van Giesen. Katie Reinberger participated as a "seasoned pilgrim", on her second voyage. They were accompanied by George, Viviane, and Diane, who are all forever young! The journey goes on...

Worship News
The Rev. Dorothy Brown will be the officiant at Sunday services August 1 and 8 while Beth will be on vacation. We will continue to use Lift Every Voice And Sing (LEVAS) on those Sundays.
Thanks – A Correction
The new stove in the kitchen is a gift from the estate of Debbie Perry’s parents, Frances and Sterling Schrodt, for their love of the Episcopal Church.
Cooks for the Vacation Bible School were already grateful for the generous gift and we thank Debbie for passing on this bequest, and to Ross for the installation.
Thank you!
What a wonderful Vacation Bible School we had in June! 115 young, and young_at_heart people Dared to Be Different as we came together for five evenings with the book A Wrinkle in Time as our inspiration.
We were entertained each night
by a talented skit cast including: Olivia Morris as Meg Murry; Quinn Phillips as Charles Wallace Murry; Miles Peck as Calvin O'Keefe; Jenifer Borg as Mrs. Murry; Mike Peck as Mr. Murry; Karen Hankins as Mrs. Whatsit; Julie Phillips as Mrs. Who; Vicky Tavernier as The Happy Medium; Thomas Peck as The Prime Coordinator; Jenifer Borg as Aunt Beast; and Catherine Drewry, narrator.
Beautiful sets for the skits were created by Cheryl Altman, Jenifer Borg, Viviane Van Giesen, Jenifer Marquardt, Olivia Morris, and Catherine Drewry. Jonathan Klein provided a cd with cool sound effects. Pete Nicholls was in charge of the sound system.
Alice Mohor helped us get
organized, created inspiring poems for each night, and taught us fun movement games that all could play and enjoy. Nancy Hobart assisted Alice, and was our registration director. Karen Hankins and Beth Thornton were our great Bible story tellers, and helped us learn so much. Madeline Darnell put together super creative art projects for each night. She was assisted by Carol Jones, Melinda Jones, Viviane Van Giesen, Jenifer Borg, Diane Barret, Sara Ruth Kerr, and Tracy Howe.
We ended each night with joyous
singing led by Shelby and Jeff Welch, Debbie Perry, and Vicky Tavernier, and Compline led by Beth Long and Catherine Drewry.
Oh, and each evening we started
with a delicious dinner! Our Dinner Crew consisted of Francesca and Andrew Lane, Catherine, George, and McGowan Drewry, Pete Nicholls, Glenn Knowlton, Eddie and Cedric Van Giesen, and Shelby and Jeff Welch. Special thanks to Vicky and Mark Tavernier for donating lots of delicious ice cream! Thank you also to those who donated sandwiches and fruit.
It was a week of great fellowship,
deepened faith, and strengthened friendships. And we learned as we had fun, too! Thanks!
Sunday School
Sunday school for children PreK - 5th grades has continued through the summer as a "one-room school house". We will begin our regular rotations on August 15. We begin at 9:15 in the sanctuary with songs, then divide by age groups from 9:30 - 10:15 for our workshops.
Sundays are fun days at St. Gregory's!
Exciting news: Our Children's Church team will be creating a new chapel in the Christian Education building very soon! Children's Church meets most Sundays during part of the regular 10:30 service, and offers a worship experience specially designed to reach elementary-aged children.
Adult Christian Education
The Adult Education Forum on Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15 will continue the discussions of the book Einstein's God; Conversations About Science and the Human Spirit, by Krista Tippett. The series will end on September 5.
Nursery
Much to their frustration, (and at parish expense) the nursery staff has reported that many items are missing from the nursery, and the nursery has been left in disarray on a frequent basis lately. They have consulted with the Athens Mothers' Center, who also don't know why this is happening. Our nursery is open for use only when it is staffed. Please consult with one of the following people if you need to use the nursery at an unscheduled time.

Athens Justice Project and Milner Ball
Milner Ball will be honored at the annual luncheon of the Athens Justice Project as the 2010 recipient of the 2010 Justice Award. The organization, of which he is a founding member, works to effectively rehabilitate former inmates by providing support to them and their families. The annual Social Empowerment award will be presented to Joe Irving. Tickets for the October 26 luncheon are $35. It will be held at noon in the Classic Center. If ten Gregorians plan to go, we can reserve a table. Contact Conoly Hester, mchester99@earthlink.net> or 706-543-9138, for more information.
Coming Home: Story, Poem, and the Spirit
A Retreat at the Valle Crucis Conference Center, Valle Crucis, NC, November 19-21.
Stories and Poems: We will gather to discuss short stories and poems throughout the weekend. These gatherings will be led by Sarah Gordon and Ron Balthazor, but will be more an open conversation about the works than presentations. The readings will be selected by the leaders, and a collection of the readings will be available prior to the retreat.
Liturgy: We will follow a modified and simple Liturgy of the Hours that will be led by Father Dann Brown. The Liturgy of the Hours or Divine Office is the set of daily prayers prescribed by the Church to be recited at the canonical hours. The Liturgy consists primarily of psalms supplemented by hymns and readings. Together with the Mass, it constitutes the official public prayer life of the Church.
Contemplation and Silence: One component of the weekend will be an emphasis on silence as a spiritual exercise. Dann will offer an introduction to contemplation and silence as a spiritual practice at the beginning of our retreat. We will also offer various options for artistic spiritual expression.
Cost: The retreat will cost $120.00 per person, which includes lodging, all meals, and materials for the retreat. Participation is limited to 30 people. Some scholarships are available. A non-refundable deposit of $60.00 is required, with the remainder due before departure for the retreat. Please indicate your interest in participating in the retreat by e-mailing Jane Hudson at JaneGHudson@ gmail.com and sending your check, made out to St. Gregory the Great, to Jane Hudson, 1230 Black Ike Road, Watkinsville, Ga 30677-3663

An Invitation
Dear St. Gregory Friends, We are members of an organic
fruit/veg buying coop and I have been surprised by how difficult it has been in the summer to have a quorum of buyers. I thought it might be something some parishioners would find attractive. If anyone would be interested in joing this coop email me for more details.
Love, Elizabeth edubberly@gmail.com Veggie buying coop Twice a month, we place an order for a box. This box contains whatever the buyer is able to get at a good price from the wholesaler who brings organic produce to local supermarkets...essentially our group is treated as a supermarket with volunteers weighing out and dividing the goods between those who ask for a box. This is not associated with a local farm, unfortunately, but it is a way to get organic products for a reasonable price. The contents vary from time to time but usually include potatoes, carrots, lettuce, greens, apples, bananas year round and then seasonal items (this week plums, peaches, green beans, grapes, strawberries, tomatoes, garlic, summer squash). There are also opportunities during the year to buy organic cheese or dairy products (whatever is on "special"). The price is usually close to $40 but depends on the number of people who purchase, I have never paid more that $49. The box can be ordered bi monthly with no obligation, you can choose to buy one time and then a few months later order another box. The box is typically 20x16x9 and extremely heavy and full. I get a box for my parents and a box for our family of four and between the 2 boxes and the six consumers, we don't really buy produce at either house for two weeks. I also know people who share boxes, depending on your level of produce consumption and home cooking and also to spread around preferences (love greens but not apples? Share it with your applesauce making neighbor on heparin who can't eat collards!).I got a box yesterday and the next order will be placed Thursday July 29 for delivery Monday Aug2. The pick up is between 4:30 and 5:30 at the First Assembly of God church on College Station Road. I typically pick up several boxes for friends who cannot make the pickup window and the two for my family, but would be happy to pick up others and people could collect them from the church or my house (in Homewood Hills). Email me at edubberly@gmail.com with veggie box in the subject and let's get some affordable organics into your life!
Can you help?
This is really a voice from the past. I hope all at St. Gregory's are well. And naturally, I'm writing to ask a favor. About a year ago I moved from the Chattanooga area to the Pawleys Island, SC area. In the course of the move, several things were lost, among them a box of cook books. One of my favorites was a book titled "Gregorian Goodies" (gray, spiral bound and about 6" X 8"). I believe it dated to the 70s. At any rate, it contained many of my favorite comfort-food recipes. Is the any chance that there might be a copy lying around the church that I could have for the cost plus a donation? I would love to replace it. I enjoyed visiting your web site though I didn't recognize many names or faces. I suppose I'm getting old. Thanks so much. Rob Orchard
